How to Make Money Every Time Someone Joins Your Email List

Yay for sales funnels! As a Pinterest manager, my job is to get more traffic to your website.

And if you work with me, that’s what you’re going to get. But my strategy goes beyond Pinterest.

Yes, I want more people seeing your amazing content but I also want them to convert into email subscribers or potential leads!

That’s why I’m a big advocate for creating a customer funnel that will lead people into your email list so you can start monetizing your increased website traffic.

Subscriber into buyer? Yes, please! Because helloooo...passive income!

And the first thing you want to do to create passive income every time someone subscribes to your email list is to create a TRIPWIRE (it sounds techy & complicated but it’s actually pretty simple!)

With a tripwire, I’ve made over $500 in passive income just from using this method. And you can too!

Let’s break it down for ya:


WHAT IS A TRIPWIRE

A tripwire is a low-cost offer that is presented to people immediately after they sign up for a freebie. It’s also usually a limited time offer.

For example, if you offer a free 5 day email course, a good tripwire might be a $20 ebook or bank of resources that goes more in depth or expands on the topic covered in the email course.

And the best part is that it’s all automated!

Once you have your tripwire set up, your sales start coming in on autopilot the more people sign up to your email list!

HOW TO SET UP A TRIPWIRE TO EARN PASSIVE INCOME

1.HAVE A HIGH-VALUE FREEBIE

This can be an ebook, email course, free training, or anything that your audience needs to solve one of their pain points.

Make sure all your systems are in place to get you ready for new email subscribers like:

  • Setting up the freebie landing page

  • Setting up the delivery email of the freebie in your email marketing provider

  • Creating an opt-in form or graphic to embed throughout your site & blog posts for people to download it

 
 




2. CREATE THE TRIPWIRE (OFFER) RELATED TO YOUR FREEBIE

First decide on the topic & format of your tripwire. Your freebie and tripwire topics have to be highly related. This is crucial!

This way you know that those people that are opting in are interested in that subject and it increases the chances of people buying your tripwire.

For example, my freebie is all about using the power of Pinterest to grow your email list.

My tripwire related to the freebie is a comprehensive Pinterest success guide with 4 sets of done-for-you resources to help my subscribers totally nail their Pinterest strategy using proven techniques WITHOUT the overwhelm.

3. CREATE AN IRRESISTIBLE SALES PAGE FOR YOUR TRIPWIRE

Once you have your high-value freebie & your tripwire created, it’s time to set up your landing page for tripwire conversion.

I set up my sales page on my Squarespace but I know people who have used Leadpages as well.

Think about what’s going to motivate your subscribers to invest in this product.

Speak to the transformation they’re going to receive.

Make the sales page beautiful & enticing. Show imagery of what they’re going to get.

And remember to encourage a sense of urgency since it’s a limited time offer!

Remember, the purpose of a tripwire is to motivate people to make the purchase decision quickly & easily so use sales language & tactics that will help them see why they need this product in their lives.

4. ADD A PLATFORM TO ACCEPT PAYMENT

There are many tools out there that let you accept payment depending on what platform your website is hosted on.

Since I use Squarespace, I was deciding between PayPal or Moonclerk.

Because I needed something that integrated with ConvertKit and Stripe, Moonclerk worked the best for me & it’s been amazing so far!

When choosing the platforms that you’re going to use to set up your tripwire, make sure you check if they integrate with your current platforms (i.e. your email marketing provider) because it’s going to make your life a whole lot easier!


5. INSERT A COUNTDOWN TIMER ON YOUR SALES PAGE

Tripwires are proven to convert better when they have a countdown timer.

When you create a sense of urgency with your tripwires, it gives people a “now or never” kind of urgency and it makes it harder for them to pass on the opportunity.

A good rule of thumb is to keep it under 10 minutes...more than that increases the chances of you losing people along the way.



6. SET UP YOUR DELIVERY EMAILS IN YOUR EMAIL MARKETING PROVIDER

Once your systems are in place, make sure you set up the delivery method.

For me, my email marketing platform (ConvertKit) was the best option so I made sure to create an email that delivers my tripwire to my buyers as soon as they purchase.

Since my payment platform (Moonclerk) directly integrates with ConvertKit, ConvertKit automatically knows when someone has made a purchase so it can send them their product! #winning

7. HAVE READERS REDIRECTED TO YOUR TRIPWIRE SALES PAGE AS SOON AS THEY OPT IN

This is probably the most crucial step in setting up your tripwire set up!

The whole purpose is to send people directly to your tripwire sales page right after they hit submit on the freebie opt in page.  

ConvertKit has a clear option In their opt-in forms to redirect people to an external link after they’ve hit submit, so make sure that whatever delivery platform you’re using has this option!


8. USE PINTEREST TO DRIVE TRAFFIC TO YOUR FREEBIE

Okay, so you have your freebie, you have your tripwire and all the tech is ready. Yay!

Now it’s time to drive major traffic to your freebie so you can start selling your high-value tripwire!

My favorite way to drive traffic to my website on autopilot is using Pinterest.

For all the accounts that I work on, Pinterest becomes their #1 or #2 traffic referrer… so yeah, you definitely want to take advantage of the power of this platform.

And alllll that is worth WAY more than a few dollars.
